Welcome

Hi, I’m Dr Karen Klockner (PhD), a Registered Psychologist and EMDR Consultant, based on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Profile photo of Dr Karen Klockner, specialist trauma-informed psychologist and EMDR therapist.

I have been working as a psychologist in Nerang since 2007 and have over 17 years of experience using EMDR Therapy to support adults impacted by trauma and adverse life experiences.

I completed EMDR Institute training in 2009 and, in 2012, became one of only a small number of psychologists in Australia endorsed as an EMDR Consultant. I remain actively involved in the EMDR community, facilitating EMDR basic training and serving on the EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA) Board.

Alongside my private practice, I have worked across both public and private sectors, particularly in workplace safety, health, and wellbeing, and I currently hold an Associate Professor role at CQUniversity.

In my clinical work, I specialise in trauma-related concerns, using EMDR Therapy and Ego State Therapy to support symptom reduction, recovery, and long-term wellbeing.

    Recovery and ongoing wellbeing

Supporting people who want more than symptom relief, with a focus on nervous system regulation, emotional stability, and building a greater sense of safety, resilience, and personal growth.

How I Work

I specialise in working with adverse life events, trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Trauma and Dissociation using:

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Ego State Therapy (EST) (Parts Work)

I believe in a flexible, client-centred approach to therapy, tailoring EMDR Therapy to the unique needs of each person.

You are in control of how many sessions you would like to attend. Some people come for a few sessions to resolve a specific issue, whilst others commit to the process for longer, usually to work through deeper issues.

❱ Trauma and adverse life events

Trauma can be thought of as a negative event or happening in our lives which is outside of our normal experience in everyday living. Trauma is now more widely referred to as an Adverse Life Event.

We know that often when something traumatic happens, it seems to get locked in the nervous system with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings, and so on. Since the experience is locked there, it continues to be triggered whenever a reminder comes up.

❱ How EMDR Therapy can help

The eye movements used in EMDR seem to unlock the nervous system and allow your brain to process the experience similar to what is happening in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, or dream sleep. Through the use of similar eye movement the brain seems to unlock the negatively stored memories and processes the memory of the event to an adaptive resolution.

❱ What to expect during an EMDR session

EMDR Therapy is an 8 phase evidence based therapy which starts with history taking, treatment planning and resourcing of the client. In the following phases eye movements are used to ‘process’ a memory.

During EMDR the therapist works with the client to identify a specific problem or memory as the focus for the treatment session/s. The client is asked to call to mind the disturbing issue or event. The therapist will then ask the client to bring up the memory and begin eye movements. The eye movements are used until the memory comes less disturbing and becomes associated with a positive thought and belief. The eye movements help the brain ‘process’ the negatively stored material until the memory shifts to a healthy resolution.

I am available for supervision to both mental health professionals completing EMDR Therapy Basic Training (Level 1 and Level 2) and ongoing individual supervision for those working with more complex client presentations after basic training.
